Global Climate Agreements 2025: Progress and Challenges
Global Climate Agreements 2025: Progress and Challenges

In 2025, the world is at a critical juncture in the fight against climate change. Countries are working to implement the Paris Agreement, but progress is uneven, and more ambitious action is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The annual UN climate conference, COP33, was held in 2025, with countries agreeing to accelerate the phase-down of fossil fuels and increase funding for climate adaptation in developing countries. This was a significant step forward, but many experts believe it still does not go far enough.

Renewable energy capacity is growing rapidly, with solar and wind power becoming the cheapest sources of electricity in most countries. However, the transition to clean energy is being slowed by supply chain issues, permitting challenges, and resistance from fossil fuel interests.

Developing countries are calling for more financial support from wealthy nations, who are historically responsible for most greenhouse gas emissions. The Loss and Damage Fund, established at COP28, is starting to disburse money, but more funding is needed to help countries adapt to climate change.

Climate impacts are becoming more severe, with heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires affecting communities around the world. These impacts are particularly severe in vulnerable regions like small island states, Africa, and South Asia.

Businesses are taking action to reduce their carbon emissions, with many setting net-zero targets. However, there is growing scrutiny of corporate climate claims, with concerns about greenwashing and insufficient action.

Civil society movements are continuing to push for more ambitious climate action, with young people playing a key role. These movements are raising awareness about the urgency of the climate crisis and holding governments and businesses accountable for their commitments.
